Scott's Blog Notes: The Halloween week playlist: big Big BIG with many thematic threads, starting with the obvious stuff, then add in some Voodoo, Magic, Blood, Moon, Shadows, Eyes, Night ... We won't subject you to a bunch of weird & spooky type 'sounds' for a week, so the theme is in the song titles - titles to give you something to go Hmmmmnnn... about for Halloween - plus a nice excuse to dip into the archives for some change from the newer releases usually featured here!

Fresh Cuts, October 22 - 28, 2006:
	Feature Albums: Sensitive Chaos - Leak
Scott's Blog Notes: Sensitive Chaos slowly leaks out six songs (most between 9-14 minutes) spanning 53 minutes of music crafted and performed by Jim Combs, aka Sensitive Chaos. From the Sensitive Chaos web site: "The tunes fall squarely in the rpm, ambient drums'n'bass camp and shares affinities with Ulrich Schnauss, William Orbit, and James Figurine. The tracks range from ambient/new age (the good kind) jazz to ambient, down-tempo, drums'n'bass." Jim develops catchy electronica / spacey "rhythms," with the title track (which includes Brian Good on soprano saxophone) perhaps a bit like Tangerine Dream meets Trad Jazz, but with pleasing effect (since that sounds flippant or counterintuitive). My favorite is last, "Android Cat Dreams Of Mice," which develops more of that drums'n'bass sound (but slow!) as it progresses. It's a little different than our norm, a cool trip into a different edge of the ambient universe. Also this week, more from prior features Bodhi, Surface 10, Paul Avgerinos, Mark Isham & Between Interval, and new adds from Soulfood & Jadoo, Steve Wick both which will be featured here shortly.

Fresh Cuts, October 15 - 21, 2006:
	Feature Albums: Bodhi - Trans Ukraine
Scott's Blog Notes: More East meets Electronica from Bodhi, who describes this adventure as "Shamanic flutes with rich, ambient, dub-influenced electronic grooves [which] take the listener on a pilgrimage beyond borders." There are a total of nine upbeat really cool grooves based around 3 major themes (Crimea I, II & III, Kiev I, II & III, Odessa I, II & III), so while there's some thematic repitition within these, The riffs are just so catchy that the variations satisfy the wanting for more that the prior one leaves you with (even after 7-10 minutes in some cases). It's hard to turn off! These would be great backdrops for travel programs like Globe Trekker. Bodhi (formerly Kevin Setchko) has produced 12 albums of original music including ones with his touring ensemble Crystal Wind. Also this week, more from prior features Surface 10, Paul Avgerinos, Mark Isham & Between Interval, and Steve Wick who has a new CD which will be playing here shortly.

Scott's Blog Notes: Surface 10 (Dean De Benedictis) "Surface Tensions" is "a 1997-to-2006 selection of Dean De Benedictis's slower-groove, experimental-ambient pieces. "Traces of glitch and IDM can be found, but overall the music of Surface Tensions is meant as another chapter in the unspoken genre of the techno-tragic sound." Its easier (for those of us who don't have enough time to try to sound like we know more about this stuff than those creating it) to quote the PR and avoid the tension of trying to figure out which esoteric sub-genre applies in a genre which has more fragments than a fractal. Bottom line is that if you like Robert Rich and similar ambient textures with embellishments, you'll enjoy this one too. New on the playlist here is Bodhi, and it will be featured soon, plus more from prior feature artists Paul Avgerinos, Mark Isham and Between Interval.

Scott's Blog Notes: Paul Avgerinos' latest album - GNOSIS blends electronica, acoustic and vocalise in sometimes spacey, sometimes easternly (ancient Greek Chants), but predominantly ambient grooves which might be interpreted as meditative, transportive, or inspirational. It is a fine follow up to last year's Phos Hilaron with even more impressive album art gracing the cover of the CD. Also, new on the playlist this week, Surface 10, and more from prior feature artists Mark Isham and Between Interval.
